Terms of service
Last updated: [date]
These terms govern your use of Lingua, an online service for practising spoken Italian and English with an AI conversation partner. By creating an account you agree to them and to our privacy policy.
Who we are

The service and what you are talking to
You practise by speaking with an AI tutor. The tutor is an artificial intelligence, not a person, and its voice is generated. It can make mistakes in grammar, vocabulary, facts and corrections. It is a practice tool, not a certified teacher, and you should not rely on it for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice. Your voice is processed by Google's Gemini service while you speak, as described in the privacy policy.
Your account
- You need a valid email address and must confirm it. Keep your password private.
- One account is for one person. Only one practice session can be active on an account at a time, and starting a new session ends the older one.
- New accounts receive a short free trial, with the number of minutes shown in the app. The trial is not a purchase and can be changed or ended at any time.
What you can buy
- Licence plans let you use Lingua with your own Google Gemini API key for the licence period shown at checkout. You create the key yourself and are responsible for it. Google charges you directly for the usage under Google's own terms. We do not store your key on our servers.
- Package plans include the practice minutes and period shown at checkout, provided through our service. They do not include using your own key. Unused minutes expire at the end of the period and do not carry over. [Choose one: Packages renew automatically until you cancel. / Packages are one-time purchases and do not renew.]

The price, including any VAT that applies, is shown before you pay. Payments are processed by Stripe. We will not change the price of a period you have already paid for.
Your right to withdraw, and refunds
If you are a consumer in the European Union, you normally have 14 days from purchase to withdraw from the contract without giving a reason.
Lingua is a digital service that starts as soon as you pay. Before you buy, we ask you to expressly agree that the service starts immediately and to acknowledge that, if you withdraw within the 14 days, you must pay a proportionate amount for what you have already used. We refund the rest.
How to withdraw. During the 14 days, open Account in the app and press Withdraw from contract here. You will see a summary of what you used and what we will refund. Press Confirm withdrawal here to finish. We then email you to confirm that we received your withdrawal. If you bought more than one plan, you withdraw from each plan separately.
When it takes effect. Your withdrawal takes effect when you confirm it in the app. From that moment your access to that plan ends, and the proportionate amount is calculated from your use up to that moment.
The proportionate amount is:
- Package plan (usage included): the price you paid × minutes used ÷ minutes included in the plan.
- Licence plan (your own Gemini key): the price you paid × days since purchase ÷ days in the licence period (365 for an annual licence). A day that has started counts as a day.
For example, if you withdraw from a package plan that includes 300 minutes after using 100 of them, we keep one third of the price and refund the other two thirds. If you have used all the included minutes, the service has been fully provided and you can no longer withdraw.
Your refund. We refund the remainder to the original payment method within 14 days of your withdrawal, and we cancel the related subscription so that it does not renew. [Optional: describe any extra goodwill refund you offer, for example within 7 days if you have used less than 10 minutes.] After the 14 days, or once all included minutes have been used, the withdrawal button is no longer shown. Nothing here limits your rights under mandatory consumer law.
If a subscription renews, you can cancel before the next renewal date [explain how: Stripe link or email]. Cancelling stops future charges and your access continues until the end of the period you paid for.
What you must not do
- Share your account or sell or resell access to it.
- Try to bypass limits, minute counting or security, or use automated tools against the service.
- Use the service to harass, to break the law, or to create harmful or illegal content.
- Copy or reverse engineer the service or its tutor instructions.
We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules. If we close an account without a good reason connected to a breach, we will refund the unused part of what you paid.
Availability and changes
We work to keep Lingua running but cannot guarantee it will always be available or error free. It depends on providers such as Google, Stripe and our hosting company, and parts of it may change or be withdrawn. If we withdraw a paid feature you are using, we will refund the unused part of the period.
Liability
We are responsible for damage as required by law. Beyond that, to the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect losses or for the content of AI-generated replies, and our total liability for a claim is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer.
Closing your account
You can stop using Lingua at any time. To delete your account and data, email [support@yourdomain.com]. Deleting your account does not by itself cancel a subscription or entitle you to a refund, so cancel first if you have one.
Changes to these terms, and the law that applies
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will update the date above and tell you by email or in the app before the change applies to you. These terms are governed by Italian law. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live and may bring a claim in the courts there.
